AKPS steps up border security readiness ahead Johor Bahru‑Singapore RTS Link launch in January

JOHOR BAHRU, September 19 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is ramping up security measures and inspection capabilities in anticipation of the January launch of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. AKPS Director-General Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain announced that efforts were being ramped up through technology, personnel training and operational simulations to guarantee the efficient examination of documents and cargo.

He stressed that while technology is a valuable asset, it should not be the only line of defense against security risks. "Technology helps, but it's not the whole answer. A mix of technology and other methods is crucial," he told Bernama. AKPS will also assist operators in choosing appropriate technologies to bolster security and reduce potential risks.

Regarding the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to curb illicit goods smuggling, Mohd Shuhaily explained that AI requires a learning phase, including machine learning, before reaching full maturity. "Before AI matures, it needs to learn through machine learning. So, it is still in development," he stated. Currently, 400 AKPS trainees are undergoing a three-month training program at the Segamat Police Training Centre, with completion expected by the end of September.

They will be deployed to the RTS Link in October, with dry runs planned over the following two months to ensure readiness before the January launch. Trainees will initially assist senior officers at the Sultan Iskandar Building, focusing on document and cargo inspection.
