Cocaine case: Nobody has submitted evidence linking NDC, government officials – Kwakye Ofosu

Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu affirmed on Thursday that the government does not support the harassment or intimidation of journalists. He emphasized that the government has no policies that tolerate such conduct and that sometimes, non-state actors may resort to overzealousness in their attempts to manhandle journalists.

The minister noted that the government regards the media as an essential partner in national development, highlighting the media's role in promoting accountability and citizen engagement. As a result, the government would not condone the intimidation of journalists.

During the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Steering Committee meeting in Accra, Kwakye Ofosu reiterated the government's commitment to creating a secure and conducive environment for journalists to work freely and professionally. He stressed the importance of regular interaction between the government and the media to ensure that the administration led by President Mahama remains responsive to citizens' concerns and aspirations.

However, the minister cautioned against the abuse of journalism and the right to free speech, clarifying that holding individuals accountable for violating the law should not be misconstrued as an attempt to suppress freedom of expression. Kwakye Ofosu called for a review of the National Media Commission's (NMC) role, aiming to make it more responsive to contemporary media industry developments.

He emphasized that any review of the NMC's mandate should focus on media content regulation and professional standards while safeguarding media freedom.

Furthermore, the government expressed its support for the Ghana Journalists Association's bid to host the next conference of the Federation of African Journalists.
