Singapore speaker Seah Kian Peng apologises after video shows him dozing off during Parliament sitting

SINGAPORE, September 18 — Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng expressed regret following a viral video that captured him appearing to doze off while presiding over a parliamentary sitting on September 9. The incident gained traction after CCTV footage revealed a clerk approaching the Speaker's chair to wake him during the debate, reported CNA.

Seah, who assumed his role as Speaker in August 2023, communicated his apology via a Facebook post. He acknowledged that he had been unwell and had consumed medication, but emphasized that this explanation did not justify his lapse in conduct. The Speaker admitted that his momentary inattention fell short of the expectations associated with his position.

He explained that he had nodded off after an extended session lasting over four hours and should have called for a break earlier rather than persisting with the proceedings. Seah highlighted his commitment to conscientiously fulfilling his duties over the past three years and his dedication to upholding the standards of the role.

He expressed regret for the lapse and assured that he would implement measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. He reiterated his commitment to serving parliament and Singaporeans "to the best of my ability." Footage of the incident showed MP Dennis Tan of Hougang concluding his speech on the Health Sciences Authority (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill before a staff member approached the Speaker's desk.
