Mamadi Diakite has won NCAA, G League and NBA championships – now he wants to make Dubai his home
The life of a professional basketball player can be a nomadic one and perhaps no one understands that more than Dubai Basketball’s summer recruit Mamadi Diakite. The Guinea native left home at 15 to study and play basketball in the United States and went on to win a national championship with the University of Virginia (UVA), scoring a famous buzzer-beater along the way that has gone down as one…
Dubai Basketball's summer recruit, Mamadi Diakite, has won championships at every level of his professional basketball career, from the NCAA to the NBA. Born in Guinea, Diakite moved to the United States at age 15 to play basketball, winning the UVA national championship. He then signed with the Milwaukee Bucks as an undrafted free agent in 2020, winning their G League title, playing 21 games for the regular season and seven in the playoffs, and ultimately winning an NBA championship with the Bucks.
Diakite has since moved around to six NBA teams within four years before settling in Europe with Spanish side Baskonia. However, he has now joined Dubai Basketball, a team that has made significant moves after winning the historic ABA League title and finishing 11th in their first EuroLeague season. Diakite is drawn to Dubai's remote location and the team's focus on creating a supportive environment for players, both on and off the court.
He hopes the city will provide him with stability after years of relocation. The Dubai Basketball squad has bolstered its roster with world-class coaches and players, including Xavi Pascual from Barcelona and Tornike Shengelia and Thomas Walkup from Olympiacos Piraeus. The Euorleauge SuperCup, a newly-introduced tournament featuring Europe's top clubs, will take place this weekend, and Diakite is looking forward to adding another championship to his impressive list.
