Lekki Port stakeholders decry worsening traffic congestion

Stakeholders at the Lekki Deep Seaport are expressing concern over worsening traffic congestion, attributing the issue to the Lagos State Government's ineffectiveness in enforcing traffic rules along the port axis. This disruption impacts the movement of trucks and other port-bound vehicles, raising fears that prolonged gridlock could hinder cargo evacuation and degrade port operations.

The deployment of an electronic call-up system to regulate truck movements is already in place, but the failure of the Lagos State Government to ensure the use of designated truck parks for traffic management remains a significant challenge. Investors in truck park facilities are facing losses due to poor patronage, despite assurances from the Lagos State Government.

Managing Director of Lekki World and a major stakeholder, Mr. Adeola Olusodo, stated that ongoing efforts were being made to address the situation. Truckers and park operators have highlighted the challenges faced in securing call-up tickets and the underutilization of accredited truck parks due to ineffective enforcement of traffic regulations.

The Port Manager of Nigerian Ports Authority, Mr. Emmanuel Anda, also pointed to the lack of NPA involvement in the truck call-up system's formulation as a contributing factor to the poor enforcement of traffic regulations. The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, acknowledged the temporary nature of the congestion, attributing it to rumors of petroleum price hikes, which prompt truck drivers to rush to the port for product evacuation.

The Lagos State Government is committed to enforcing traffic regulations while minimizing disruptions to business activities. The Federal Road Safety Corps has deployed officers to patrol the coastal road leading to the port and refinery, aiming to maintain free-flowing vehicular traffic. The Lagos State Government has pledged to intensify enforcement efforts along the Apapa and Lekki Port corridors following feedback and an assessment of the traffic situation.
