Lekki Port stakeholders decry worsening traffic congestion

Stakeholders along the Lekki Deep Seaport axis have expressed concern over worsening traffic congestion, which is impacting port operations. The Lagos State Government is blamed for failing to enforce traffic rules effectively along the axis. The deployment of an electronic call-up system to regulate truck movement into and out of the port areas is already operational, but the lack of use of designated truck parks for traffic management is a major challenge.

Investors in truck park facilities are concerned about the declining patronage, which could lead to losses. The Managing Director of Lekki World, Mr Adeola Olusodo, stated that efforts are underway to address the situation, while a trucker highlighted the difficulties faced by truckers in securing call-up tickets before reaching the port.

The Port Manager, Nigerian Ports Authority, Lekki Port, Mr Emmanuel Anda, attributed the poor enforcement to the NPA's non-involvement in the formulation of the truck call-up system. The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Seun Osiyemi, acknowledged the congestion but stated that it is temporary, caused by rumours of petroleum product price hikes.

The Lagos State Government plans to intensify enforcement efforts along the Apapa and Lekki Port corridors.
