'India Has Launched Second Phase Of Semiconductor Journey': PM Modi At Semicon 2026

India has commenced its second phase of the semiconductor journey, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who inaugurated Semicon India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. Modi noted that India has achieved in four years what usually takes the world a decade, advancing from capability building to commercial production. The first phase of the mission was valued at around $8 billion, while the second phase sets a target of $13.5 billion.

Modi emphasized that the government is introducing reforms in the sector, inviting international companies to collaborate with Indian startups, design firms, and entities owned by Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI). India is moving beyond semiconductor capabilities towards actual commercial chip production, with the government ensuring success through policy, funding, and regulatory measures.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted how India is evolving from just building semiconductor capabilities to actual commercial chip production, describing chip manufacturing as a "never-ending journey." Modi highlighted the growing global trust in India's semiconductor ecosystem, citing the presence of major international companies at the three-day conference. This trust is bolstered by the participation of over 600 exhibitors, including 240 international firms, and 150 speakers from 40 countries.

Modi also underscored India's commitment to nurturing young talent in the semiconductor sector, stressing that students are being trained in chip design and are gaining hands-on experience. He framed this talent pipeline as pivotal for India's long-term semiconductor ambitions, positioning the country's youth as a key driver of its entry into the global chip industry.

This year's Semicon India, themed "Transform Tomorrow: Silicon to Systems – Building the Ecosystem," is being held jointly by the India Semiconductor Mission, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and industry association SEMI. It follows the launch of Semicon 1.0 in 2021, with three of its twelve projects already in commercial production. The government is preparing to roll out Semicon 2.0, centered on six pillars to strengthen India's presence across the entire semiconductor value chain.
