US Announces South Africa Visa Curbs Over Race Claims

The United States has announced new visa restrictions for South Africans in response to persistent claims of race-based discrimination against the white, Afrikaner minority in the country. U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has criticized South Africa over issues such as land and employment laws aimed at addressing inequalities faced by Black people 30 years after the end of apartheid.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the U.S. will not tolerate such behavior, as it undermines peace, economic stability, and the rule of law, and is incompatible with America's foreign policy pillars. The U.S. ambassador to South Africa hinted at a series of escalating measures following the initial visa restrictions.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has denied any evidence of discrimination against whites in his country and called for global efforts to counter false narratives about white persecution. Despite these denials, the Trump administration has continued to attack South Africa, including through high tariffs, boycotting a G20 summit in Johannesburg, and facilitating the settlement of thousands of white Afrikaners in the United States.
