US announces new visa restrictions for certain South Africans

The United States has introduced new visa restrictions targeting South Africans involved in specific laws and policies in their country, according to a recent announcement by the US State Department. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the restrictions could apply to individuals deemed responsible for or complicit in measures enabling land seizures without compensation, race-based discrimination, or violence against racial or ethnic minorities in South Africa.

The South African government has consistently rejected these allegations from Washington. The US move is expected to further exacerbate tensions between the two nations. This policy is implemented under a section of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows the Secretary of State to deny entry to foreign nationals whose presence or proposed actions could have "potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences" for the United States.

While the policy permits restrictions on certain immediate family members of the targeted individuals, no names have been publicly disclosed as of now.
