Ford comes close to endorsing Chow in Toronto mayoral race: ‘Read between the lines’

Ontario Premier Doug Ford appeared to come close to endorsing incumbent Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow during a recent speech in the city. Speaking at an unrelated event, Ford praised Chow's leadership at city hall, saying their relationship was "phenomenal" and that they had given Toronto "over $9 billion" in funding. Ford added, "We're going to continue supporting the mayor. She's doing an incredible job, so read between the lines."

Chow's opponent, City Council Ward 7 Coun. Brad Bradford, interpreted Ford's comments as an almost-endorsement of the mayor. Bradford's team stated that the statement indicated Ford's willingness to negotiate with Chow, noting that she had conceded to his demands. Recent polls showed Chow leading in the race with 50 percent support, Bradford at 39 percent, and former federal minister Chris Alexander at 10 percent.

This stance marked a significant contrast from Ford's previous comments during the 2023 mayoral byelection, where he had called Chow an "unmitigated disaster" for Toronto. During the recent mayoral debate, Chow highlighted their positive relationship with Ford as a reason for voters to support her, emphasizing the flow of provincial funds to the city while in office.
