Prosecutors drop charges against jeweller accused in Pearson airport gold heist

Prosecutors have ended criminal proceedings against a jeweller accused of accepting stolen gold from a massive heist at Toronto's Pearson airport. The decision comes after prosecutors presented new evidence in court. Ali Raza, the accused jeweller, was charged alongside several others in connection with the largest gold heist in Canadian history.

His attorney maintains his client's innocence. A man involved in the heist recently pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 and was sentenced to four years in prison, with a requirement to repay $22 million in restitution. The heist involved a flight from Zurich, Switzerland, that arrived at Pearson airport carrying 400 kilograms of gold and approximately $2.5 million in foreign currency.

The items were reported missing from the airport the day after the flight landed. Another individual accused in the case is scheduled to go on trial soon.
