President Mahama urges Zonda Tech to produce vehicle components locally

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Zonda Tech Ghana Limited to begin producing vehicle components locally as Ghana aims to enhance value addition in its automotive sector. When he inaugurated Phase Three of the Zonda Tech Ghana Limited vehicle assembly plant in Tema on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Mahama stressed that the company should transition from merely assembling vehicles to manufacturing components like batteries, tires, wiring harnesses, seats, glass, plastics, and metal parts.

Mahama emphasized that assembling vehicles should not be the ultimate goal; instead, the objective should be to foster an integrated automotive industry where locally produced materials and components directly contribute to vehicle manufacturing. He urged Zonda Tech to identify and invest in locally produced components, which would strengthen domestic supply chains, retain more value within the economy, and generate additional employment opportunities for Ghanaians.

The President highlighted Ghana's commitment to becoming a leader in electric mobility by leveraging its strategic minerals, including lithium, and expanding renewable energy capacity to develop a robust battery and electric vehicle industry. Mahama outlined a clear vision: from minerals to batteries, from batteries to vehicles, from vehicles to exports, all manufactured in Ghana.

In addition to Zonda Tech, Mahama unveiled plans to introduce an electric vehicle policy, which will provide clear regulations for investors aiming to establish EV charging stations, with a focus on solar-powered charging. He stressed that Ghana's broader automotive strategy seeks to establish a competitive manufacturing base capable of serving both the domestic and wider African markets while ensuring that more value remains within the local economy.
