Nick Reiner will not face death penalty if convicted of killing parents, LA district attorney says

Prosecutors have decided not to pursue the death penalty for Nick Reiner, 32, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner. The killings occurred at their Los Angeles home in late 2021. A grand jury allegation from this summer stated that Nick was lying in wait before striking the couple, aged 78 and 70.

Multiple killings and the use of a dangerous weapon, a knife, made him eligible for the death penalty. The Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said his office conducted a thorough review before making the decision. The maximum sentence Reiner could face if convicted is life without the possibility of parole. While California maintains capital punishment, there has not been an execution since 2006, and Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a moratorium on the practice in 2019.

Rob Reiner's former defense attorney, Alan Jackson, had adamantly stated that Nick was not guilty of murder, but he resigned from the case and a public defender took over. Rob Reiner received an emotional tribute at the Emmy Awards, where he won a posthumous Emmy for best guest actor in a comedy series. Michele Singer Reiner was honored by her friend and "Bear" co-star Jamie Lee Curtis.
