DA not pursuing death penalty against Nick Reiner

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced on Tuesday that his office will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of fatally stabbing his parents at their family home in December. If convicted, Reiner faces a maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole. Hochman cited the consideration of aggravating and mitigating factors, as well as discussions with the victims' family, prosecutors, and law enforcement before making the decision.

Reiner's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, were vocal about their stance against the death penalty and the DA's office took their viewpoints into account in their final decision. Nick Reiner, who turned 33 on Monday, is also charged with murder by means of lying in wait and using a dangerous and deadly weapon in the stabbing. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The district attorney's office currently has no execution pending in California, as the state has not carried out an execution in 20 years due to a moratorium placed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2019. Hochman expects a trial for Reiner to not occur before 2027, once the defense is prepared to proceed.
