Axios: U.S. House Democrats launch investigation into Russian boxing official Umar Kremlev’s spending on Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration

U.S. House Democrats have launched an investigation into Russian boxing official Umar Kremlev's expenditures related to Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding celebration, according to Axios. The inquiry was initiated by top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, who has requested White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to provide all relevant documents, records, and communications concerning Kremlev.

Garcia is further seeking information on whether Trump Jr. holds security clearance, the reason behind the president's absence from his son's wedding, and the guest list, dates of contacts between Trump Jr. and Kremlev, as well as all wedding-related purchases and gifts made by foreign nationals, particularly those with ties to adversaries of the United States.

The Democrats are currently in the minority in the House of Representatives, which means they can only obtain the information if provided voluntarily, as they do not have the necessary majority to compel the information. However, if Democrats win a majority in the upcoming midterm elections in November, Garcia could become Congress's chief investigator with broader powers.

The investigation stems from a ProPublica report that revealed Kremlev's role in financing Trump Jr.'s wedding in the Bahamas in May, where he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the event, including renting an island, fireworks, and other expenses. The funds for the wedding were sourced from a Dubai account linked to the International Boxing Association, which Kremlev heads.

A representative for Trump Jr. described Kremlev as a "personal friend of Don" and denied any business relationship between them. President Donald Trump expressed that he had "no idea who Umar is" and stated that Kremlev had not paid for his son's wedding, asserting it was a separate party honoring the newlyweds.
