NATO Jets Shoot Down Drone Over Lithuania

NATO fighter jets intercepted and destroyed a drone that breached Lithuanian airspace early Tuesday, the most recent security incident along the alliance's eastern perimeter amid Russia's intensified aerial assaults on Ukraine. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda confirmed the interception, asserting NATO aircraft had responded promptly.

Nauseda expressed this readiness as crucial as Russia escalates its war against Ukraine. According to Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre, the drone entered Lithuanian airspace from neighboring Belarus and was heading west before crashing in a rural region near Lake Kaunas in central Lithuania. Polish Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys praised NATO allies for safeguarding Lithuanian airspace, describing the interception as a testament to the alliance's preparedness and unity.

This incident adds to the growing security worries across NATO's eastern flank, as Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have reported recurring drone incursions and airspace violations since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In response to Russian jet-powered drone attacks targeting targets in Ukraine, Poland initiated aviation operations on Tuesday, stating the measures were preventative aimed at protecting Poland's airspace, particularly areas near Ukrainian regions under attack.

The reinforced NATO response follows President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement that Ukraine is prepared to make reciprocal de-escalatory moves if Russia ceases attacks on Ukrainian critical infrastructure. US President Donald Trump reported on Monday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to cease attacks on each other's energy facilities, although Kyiv stressed that any pause must be mutual and reliably executed.

Despite diplomatic efforts, aerial attacks persisted overnight, highlighting how Russia's war is generating increasing security risks beyond Ukraine's borders.
