NATO fighter jets shoot down drone over Lithuania for the first time

NATO fighter jets intercepted and shot down a drone over Lithuania today, according to President Gitanas Nauseda. The incident is part of a series of security concerns for NATO members in the eastern flank of its alliance amidst Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, all NATO members with long borders to Russia, frequently report drone incursions since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

President Nauseda stated that such readiness is crucial for the region, given Russia's intensifying aggression against Ukraine. The drone, which entered Lithuanian airspace, was reportedly launched from neighboring Belarus and was headed west before it crashed in a rural area near Lake Kaunas in central Lithuania, as reported by the National Crisis Management Centre.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys expressed gratitude to allied countries for their role in protecting the skies and enhancing security. He emphasized the display of Allied unity and resolve, asserting that NATO remains vigilant, committed, and prepared.

Poland also responded to the drone activity by announcing the commencement of aviation operations in its airspace. These operations are described as preventive measures aimed at securing airspace, particularly in regions adjacent to threatened areas. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy indicated his nation's willingness for de-escalatory steps if Russia reciprocates, following US President Donald Trump's announcement of a deal to cease targeting each other's energy sites.

The ongoing conflict saw Ukrainian forces conducting long-range strikes against Russian military targets in Krasnodar Krai overnight, while Russia launched 102 drones at Ukraine. Notably, a NATO fighter jet intercepted a Ukrainian drone over Estonia in May, marking the first time NATO airspace police have engaged a foreign drone since the war began.

Russia has been diverting Ukrainian drones intended to target industrial facilities and oil terminals in the Saint Petersburg region, according to European officials. Lithuania's President expressed a desire to join Western nuclear deterrence against Moscow in early July, leading to the country starting the process of lifting the constitutional ban on storing nuclear weapons on its soil.
