Sokoto: We’ve Earmarked N500m for Learning Centres of Out-of-School Children

Sokoto State Government has allocated a budget of N500 million to create learning centers for out-of-school children in the Gandu and Bado regions. Professor Ahmad Ladan Ala, the State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, announced this during a meeting with stakeholders at the Sultan Maccido Institute. The State has already paid 30% of the project's cost, facilitating the commencement of construction work.

These learning centers will offer a blend of Western education, Islamic teachings, and entrepreneurial skills, aiming to empower children to become self-sufficient and valuable members of society. The Sokoto State Government, in partnership with UNICEF, has already established three Digital Almajiri and Out of School Children Centres.

Currently, 1,816 children are receiving training in basic literacy, numeracy, and vocational skills as part of the state's efforts to tackle the issue of out-of-school children. The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, highlighted ongoing reforms in the Almajiri education system, both at federal and state levels, with the aim of eliminating child beggary and integrating basic literacy, numeracy, and vocational skills into traditional Qur'anic education.

The National Commission for Almajiri and Out of School Children’s Education is conducting a nationwide tour to evaluate existing programs, engage stakeholders, and enhance the delivery of Almajiri education nationwide. The stakeholders' meeting emphasized the importance of collaboration among federal and state governments, traditional institutions, and development partners to address the challenges faced by Almajiri and out-of-school children.

The meeting also underscored the government's dedication to improving access to quality education and creating sustainable opportunities for these children.
