NATO jets shoot down drone over Lithuanian airspace after it flew in from Belarus

NATO fighter jets recently intercepted and destroyed a drone that entered Lithuania's airspace from Belarus overnight on September 15th. President Gitanas Nauseda expressed gratitude toward Allied personnel for their prompt response. The unauthorized drone had flown over Lentvaris, a town near Lithuania's capital Vilnius, before being shot down near the major city of Kaunas.

As a result, air raid sirens sounded in certain regions and temporary restrictions were imposed on Lithuanian airports, including a brief airspace closure.

This incident underscores the heightened state of alertness in the region due to Russia's increasing aggression against Ukraine. Lithuanian authorities are actively searching for the drone wreckage and are still determining its type, specifications, and intended target. Following the incident, forces were deployed to gather further information on the drone and its intended purpose.

Just a day prior, on September 14th, Ukrainian officials asserted that Russia might be leveraging Belarusian mobile networks and repeater stations located within its territory to maintain stable communication with Russian Shahed-type drones, which have been implicated in mass attacks against Ukraine. Russia has previously violated NATO airspace multiple times, including on September 8th when a suspected Russian Shahed-type drone intruded into Moldovan and Romanian airspace, prompting airspace closures, emergency alerts, and the deployment of NATO fighter jets.
