Jebel Jais to get 80km Grand Loop hiking trail and five-day climbing route

Ras Al Khaimah is expanding its hiking network by developing new routes and rehabilitating existing trails on the UAE's highest peak, Jebel Jais. The expansion includes an 80km Grand Loop multi-day route, a five-day Via Ferrata climbing route, and improved mountain shelters. The Grand Loop, linked to existing Jebel Jais trails, offers opportunities for hiking, climbing, camping, cycling, and exploration.

The Via Ferrata, inspired by the Italian Brenta Dolomites, is a 20km route divided into four sections of varying difficulty. Marjan, an investment, hospitality, and lifestyle company, announced these developments, which will continue through the 2026-27 season. UAE residents welcomed the new routes and climbing opportunities, with some describing them as a "welcome addition" that would benefit their training for bigger expeditions like climbing Kilimanjaro.

Mountaineering coach Faisal Shalmani emphasized the potential for these trails to attract visitors and support the local economy, while also calling for strict regulation to protect the environment. Trail rehabilitation is underway on the Wadi Khammed to Hidden Oasis route, with improved wayfinding signs being installed. The trail programme is guided by a biodiversity assessment identifying 45 plant species, 29 bird species, and eight mammal species in the area.
