UAE’s highest peak Jebel Jais gets an 80km hiking loop and five-day climb

Ras Al Khaimah's highest mountain, Jebel Jais, is set to become a premier destination for long-distance hiking and climbing enthusiasts. The Al Marjan developer recently announced plans to expand the trail network with an 80-kilometre Grand Loop and a five-day Via Ferrata, or iron path. The Grand Loop will connect existing trails on the mountain, allowing visitors to experience it over several days and engage in activities like hiking, climbing, camping, and cycling.

The Via Ferrata, inspired by a similar route in the Brenta Dolomites, will be a 20km-long climbing route across four sections, supported by mountain shelters. New climbing routes and a framework to ensure consistent management standards for the climbing network are also in development. Biodiversity considerations are being taken into account, with a recent biodiversity assessment highlighting 45 plant species, 29 bird species, and eight mammal species in the area.

The improvements are expected to enhance the visitor experience and ensure the sustainable management of Jebel Jais' natural environment.
