Trump says ‘very negative forces’ raising exaggerated concerns over AI

On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the escalating debate surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), alleging that critics were raising exaggerated concerns about the technology. Trump stated that the United States was currently leading China in AI development and wanted to maintain its position as the industry leader, arguing that whoever emerged victorious in the AI race would ultimately triumph.

When asked whether the AI industry should slow down or undergo stricter regulation, Trump suggested implementing "guardrails" while emphasizing that "very negative forces" were fueling the debate and propagating scenarios that were unlikely to materialize. Trump's administration, during his second term, had generally embraced AI firms, with major technology companies supporting his initiatives and contributing to his midterm campaign.

However, following warnings from two Anthropic researchers that AI could potentially lead to human extinction, some AI executives are advocating for a slowed pace of advancement to manage risks. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-step framework to regulate AI development, which garnered support from other AI industry leaders, including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.

Despite the push for regulatory measures, Amodei acknowledged the complexity of striking a balance between development and safeguarding, stating that the task would likely take years and might even be unachievable.
