Russian drone hits train near Ukraine-Poland border soon after visiting dignitaries passed through

On Sunday, a Russian drone attacked a train near the Ukraine-Poland border, occurring shortly after senior visiting officials passed through, according to Ukraine's state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia. The diplomatic train, carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and security advisers from several EU states, had left the station at Yahodyn ahead of schedule.

Ukraine's rail operator suspected the Russian drone's intended target was the diplomatic train, which had departed earlier than planned.

Bildt shared a video on X showing the attack near Yahodyn station, close to the border crossing with Poland. He stated that the train was evacuated once the drone approached, with no casualties. Both Johnson and Bildt were in Kyiv for the Yalta European Strategy conference, an annual gathering of political, business, security, and media leaders.

Another train with former CIA Director David Petraeus on board was still at Yahodyn station when the drone struck. Ukrzaliznytsia stated that they continuously adjust train schedules to protect against such attacks. Neither of the trains had immediate reports of casualties. The rail operator noted that they constantly adjust train schedules to guard against strikes.

Former British Prime Minister Johnson expressed disbelief on X, questioning Putin's warped logic in attacking a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border. He emphasized that Ukrainians endure daily random and senseless attacks, even on civilian railways. Earlier that Sunday, a Russian drone hit a truck near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, prompting a temporary closure of the crossing.
