Mahama names 48 Engineer Regiment as major sub-contractor for Accra-Kumasi Expressway

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces as a primary subcontractor for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway. This decision marks a significant expansion of the military's involvement in major infrastructure projects. The Regiment, led by Ghana Armed Forces, has already cleared 175.6 kilometers of the expressway's right-of-way and is set to formally hand over the cleared stretch near Kwaso, close to Ejisu, on September 14, 2026.

The President's announcement follows a government directive to begin preparations for the New Accra Orbital, another component of the Big Push infrastructure program. The Ministry of Roads and Highways recently invited prequalification bids for the Expressway construction, a project designed as a six-lane, access-controlled highway to drastically cut travel time between Accra and Kumasi. Government has pledged US$1.7 billion for the project, which is currently in the pre-construction phase.

President Mahama previously stated that the new expressway would shorten the journey from Accra to Kumasi from approximately five hours to about two hours, bypass major towns, and improve road safety and traffic flow. The Accra Orbital Motorway is also part of the President's broader infrastructure vision, identified in the government's plans as an outer ring road to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital.
