Agbodza, Ato Forson announce full funding for Accra-Kumasi Expressway

Roads Minister Kwame Agbodza has warned contractors and stakeholders involved in the Accra-Kumasi Expressway construction that the government will enforce strict adherence to quality, value for money, and timely delivery. The 198.7-kilometre expressway must be constructed to international standards and serve as a long-term national asset to support Ghana's economic growth.

Addressing the handover of the cleared right-of-way on Monday, September 14, Agbodza emphasized the importance of the project in alleviating the heavy burden on the Accra-Kumasi corridor. For years, this corridor has borne the brunt of national traffic, with population growth, freight, and commercial activity placing increasing strain on the existing N6 road.

Agbodza stressed that merely repairing and widening the current road would not suffice. He argued that Ghana requires a modern transportation network that segregates through traffic from local traffic. When selecting contractors, a competitive pre-qualification process was being pursued to attract firms with the technical and financial expertise necessary to complete the project successfully.

"It is imperative that the government obtains quality, value for money, and timely delivery. These principles are non-negotiable," Agbodza stated.

Additionally, the project aims to create employment opportunities and facilitate local participation for Ghanaian engineers, contractors, suppliers, artisans, and young professionals. Through skills transfer and technology exchange, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway construction project aims to contribute to the nation's economic growth and development.
