'Youth chapter needed for SAR's five-year blueprint'

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups has urged the government to include a separate chapter on youth development in the city’s five-year plan, according to a think tank established by the federation. In a recent survey of over 650 young people, nearly 60 percent expressed the belief that the blueprint holds significance for their personal growth.

Approximately half of the respondents prioritized individual livelihoods and social development as their top concern. Additionally, many young people expressed worry over soaring living expenses, the financial strain of housing, and fierce competition in the job market. Over 60 percent of respondents also felt that the authorities did not provide sufficient information regarding youth policies.

John Poon, the convenor of the think tank’s youth development and engagement group, emphasized the importance of young people as key stakeholders in the SAR’s development. He called upon the authorities to provide more support for the youth sector. "The 15th Five-Year Plan for the nation includes a dedicated chapter on youth development, so we hope the SAR government will also include a youth chapter in its five-year blueprint," Poon stated.

"Our goal is to demonstrate to society that the government is committed to investing in young people and to inform the public about the specific policies outlined in the five-year plan."

Regarding the development landscape in the Northern Metropolis, Poon highlighted that a significant number of young individuals place great importance on living facilities and job competitiveness in that region. He suggested that the government establish a youth-friendly zone in the Northern Metropolis to attract more young people. The article was edited by Aaron Tam.
