Trump says US could stay in Iran and keep oil, like Venezuela deal

Ireland: US President Donald Trump discussed the possibility of the US remaining in Iran and retaining its oil reserves during a speech at the Irish Open golf championship in Dublin on September 13. Drawing a comparison with the US' efforts to gain control over five percent of Venezuela's oil reserves, Trump suggested that the US could potentially stay in Iran if they decide to keep the oil, much like the Venezuela deal announced in August.

He reiterated that he anticipated the Iran conflict to conclude this year, perhaps following the midterm elections in November. Trump expressed optimism that the price of petrol would plummet dramatically once the Iran war concluded. The current turmoil in the Middle East has caused fluctuations in oil markets, with traders anticipating a resurgence in prices upon the attack on a Saudi oil pipeline on September 14.

Trump stated that he would only agree to a deal that was beneficial and would not accept one that was detrimental. He mentioned that Iran had been frequently requesting peace talks, a claim that Tehran has previously dismissed. However, Trump proposed an alternative approach: maintaining engagement with Iran. He likened this to the US-Venezuela arrangement, stating that they would eventually withdraw from Iran unless they choose to remain and retain the oil, similar to Venezuela, which has generated significant revenue for the US.
