Train carrying Boris Johnson and German officials was near Polish border during Russian drone attack

Russian drone attacks killed six civilians and injured 43 others across Ukraine within a 24-hour period starting on September 13, regional authorities reported. Moscow launched a massive drone assault targeting western regions far from the front lines. Ukraine's Air Force reported Russia launched 453 Shahed and Gerbera drones, including jet-powered Shaheds, alongside Parodiya decoy drones and S8000 Banderol missiles.

Ukrainian forces intercepted 405 drones and six missile strikes, which occurred at 13 locations while causing debris fallout in seven additional areas. The assault was particularly heavy in western Ukraine, which generally experiences fewer Russian attacks compared to Kyiv, Odesa, and frontline regions.

The strikes prompted air threat alerts in neighboring Poland, where the government's security center warned several counties in Lublin Voivodeship near the Ukrainian border. Adviser to President Zelensky, Serhii Flash Beskrestnov, attributed the use of gasoline-powered Shahed drones to Russia taking advantage of rainy weather to launch attacks farther from the front lines.

In Volyn Oblast, Russian forces injured at least five people with drone strikes. Near Ukraine's border with Poland, a Russian drone hit the locomotive of a Kyiv–Warsaw train, about 2 kilometers from the Polish border, but no passengers were injured. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described Putin's actions as "terror," knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO, stating, "Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners."

Journalist Katerina Sergatskova witnessed the attack near the Yahodyn checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Polish border, where Russian drones struck a gas station and a train locomotive. She and other passengers were told to evacuate immediately, but lacked shelter, and were instructed to move away from the train toward a nearby lake.

Other regions experienced Russian attacks with varying impacts. In Rivne Oblast, power outages occurred in parts of Dubno and the Rivne district, while an unspecified enterprise in the Sarny district was destroyed. In Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, a Russian drone attack damaged an industrial facility, injuring one person and shattering windows in an apartment building.

In Ternopil, Russian drones damaged transport and industrial infrastructure, resulting in one injury. Khmelnytskyi Oblast saw falling drone debris spark a fire, while Lviv Oblast had residential, utility, and school buildings damaged, with no reported injuries. Odesa Oblast saw damage to residential buildings and a children's sanatorium in the Botanical Garden, while Mykolaiv Oblast reported the death of a 71-year-old woman and injuries to four others in Russian drone attacks.

Zaporizhzhia Oblast suffered four casualties from Russian strikes, and Donetsk Oblast reported three deaths and 11 injuries. In Chernihiv Oblast, one person was killed and three injured, with an ongoing air raid alert. Kharkiv Oblast saw civilian infrastructure damage, and Kherson Oblast experienced one fatality and nine injuries.

In Sumy Oblast, six people, including a six-month-old child, were injured by Russian attacks, with an ongoing air raid alert.
