‘Senseless attack’: Boris Johnson's close shave as train behind his' struck by Russian drone near Poland border

On Sunday, a Russian drone targeted a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw near the Polish border, causing no injuries. This incident occurred shortly after a train carrying several world leaders, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, was en route back towards Poland following a security conference in Kyiv.

The train carrying the leaders stopped at around 5 am, prompting a brief halt due to a drone alert. Following the alert, the train carrying Johnson and Bildt was evacuated due to a nearby locomotive being hit by a Russian drone. Both Johnson and Bildt emerged unharmed from the incident. According to Bildt, the train they were on was the one immediately following the one attacked by the drone.

The train also carried German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s close foreign and security policy adviser, Günter Sautter, along with security advisers from Britain, France and Italy, German MPs, diplomats and academics. Johnson strongly condemned the alleged Russian attack, describing it as "random and senseless" and emphasizing the daily hardships faced by Ukrainians.

He highlighted the significant loss of life among Ukrainian Railways staff, numbering 1,700, and appealed for increased Western support for Ukraine, including providing air defenses to its railway workers and passengers. Johnson also urged for the transfer of Russian assets frozen in Europe and the UK to Ukraine and expressed optimism that Western nations could provide the necessary support for the Ukrainian war effort to conclude swiftly.
