Russian drone damages search-and-rescue tug Sapphire in Odesa Oblast port

On September 13, a Russian drone attack targeted a search-and-rescue tug named Sapphire in the port of Odesa Oblast, Ukraine. The Ministry for Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport confirmed the incident, noting that the vessel exhibited proper markings as per international maritime guidelines. Preliminary reports indicate that no one was harmed during the attack.

The ministry emphasized that the strike against the civilian SAR vessel, which solely serves civilian functions, represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian and maritime laws. Ukraine intends to thoroughly document the circumstances surrounding the attack and will share the findings with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international allies.

In addition to the attack on Sapphire, a separate Russian assault on September 13 in Odesa city proper caused significant damage. Numerous multi-story apartment buildings and private residences were destroyed or severely damaged, resulting in 20 injuries, including two children. Furthermore, other civilian structures in the area sustained harm. Oleh Kiper, the Odesa regional governor, reported that Russian forces were conducting an ongoing, extensive missile and drone assault on the region.

A fire erupted at the Botanical Garden, while warehouses and a children's sanatorium were also damaged. On September 12, a coordinated Russian assault on Odesa led to the ignition of a 25-story residential building's floors 21 to 23. Rescue teams concluded their search efforts on September 13, with two fatalities and 26 injuries reported. Following these events, Russian forces later targeted a Nova Poshta delivery company facility in Odesa, causing injury to two individuals.

Throughout the night of September 13, Russian troops continued their aggression against Odesa. The city's military administration reported damage to a multi-story building, private houses, two educational institutions, and various infrastructure sites.
