Russian drone hits passenger train headed from Kyiv to Warsaw

BRUSSELS — On Sunday morning, Russian drones fired at a crossing point along the Polish-Ukrainian border, targeting a passenger train approximately two kilometers from the frontier in Volyn Oblast. The Ukrainian state rail operator reported that the attack struck the locomotive of a train headed towards Warsaw. Train personnel had been forewarned of the imminent danger by Ukrainian authorities and remained unscathed.

Additionally, social media footage unveiled a significant blaze at a gas station situated near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing point between Ukraine and Poland. Local media confirmed the occurrence, but no casualties have been reported thus far. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reacted to the border strikes in a post on X, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces of "knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO."

He further called upon Ukraine's allies to "throw the full weight of your sanctions at Putin's aggressive regime." The frequency of attacks on the EU's borders has escalated, with intelligence agencies raising concerns about a potential direct assault by Russia on a NATO member nation. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently highlighted that Europe is grappling with an escalating campaign of threats and hybrid warfare.

Russia's hybrid war tactics have also been connected to an explosive-laden drone discovered near Leipzig airport in Germany, a sea drone disarmed by Romania in the Black Sea, and allegations of a Russian plot to eliminate the CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall.
