Flüchtlingsstatistik: Schutzquote in Deutschland steigt deutlich

The German statistics on refugees show a marked increase in the protection rate. In the first half of 2026, the federally administered protection rate stood at 47.4 percent, according to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf). This figure rose to 37.5 percent for the entire year of 2025. The protected rate excludes formal decisions where the protection request is not examined on its merits.

Familial protection played a significant role last year, with 21,195 cases granting protection status, representing 45.6 percent of the positive decisions, including mandatory deportation bans. The protected rate for those from Afghanistan was even higher, at 89.3 percent, and was the largest source of asylum applications in the first half of 2026.

A European Court of Justice ruling from October 2024 was a key factor in the rise in the protection rate, ruling that women from Afghanistan, which has been under the Islamic Taliban regime since 2021, generally have protection claims. In the first half of 2026, about 95 percent of decisions involving Afghan women resulted in a protection status.

The number of first-time asylum seekers in Germany this year was significantly lower (39,646 first applications) compared to the previous year (72,818 first applications). The new law prohibiting false or incomplete information in the asylum process, introduced in February 2024, has little practical relevance. The federal government reported only three prosecutions under the new regulation, one of which was dismissed due to triviality or lack of public interest.
