Philippine ferry fire victims may take months to identify, authorities say

The Philippine ferry fire that claimed 76 lives has raised concerns over the lengthy process of identifying the victims. Forensic experts are now collecting and comparing DNA samples from the charred remains scattered across the vessel. Richard Allan Mangalip, a forensic specialist from the Philippine National Police, noted that some remains were found together while others were spread out in various areas of the ship.

The ferry was en route to Coron in Palawan province, a journey typically taking around 20 hours. Mangalip stated that due to the large number of specimens to be examined, the timeline for identification remains uncertain, potentially ranging from weeks to months. This assessment came after rescuers recovered 41 more remains, bringing the death toll to 76 and leaving 13 people still missing.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with investigators currently unable to pinpoint the origin of the blaze. Initial reports suggest two explosions were heard before the fire broke out. The Maritime Industry Authority also noted that survivors reported hearing explosions, and the shipowner, Atienza Inter-Island Ferries, has pledged full cooperation with the investigators.

The fire is the latest in a series of fatal maritime incidents in the Philippines, a nation renowned for its vast network of islands where ferries and small boats are essential for travel.
