Defining moment: Sifuna, Orengo and Babu face big test in Nairobi

Sunday saw anti-riot police officers filling major streets of Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) in anticipation of a Linda Mwananchi mobilisation rally. Officers were seen patrolling on foot and in vehicles, with authorities claiming the deployment aimed to prevent criminal activity such as business attacks and looting. However, rally organisers expressed disapproval, stating police should secure the event after being informed of the planned activities.

A group gathered outside All Saints Cathedral, where the movement held a pre-rally church service. Another group, believed to consist of supporters, was also spotted in the CBD, chanting and singing while police kept a distance.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud revealed that police denied the movement permission to hold a rally within the CBD, warning leaders against making statements that could incite violence. According to Mohamud, police had learned of the rally through Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and the procession was set to conclude at Jacaranda Grounds.

He emphasized that the CBD would remain off-limits to the rally, threatening that police would not allow the city to descend into chaos. Mohamud warned leaders affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi movement against inflammatory remarks and incitement, threatening legal action against anyone breaking the law. Police pledged to deploy both uniformed and plain-clothes officers in the CBD and along routes leading to the rally venue to maintain order and manage traffic.

The Linda Mwananchi movement was set to launch its "Mwananchi Tour – Kanairo Edition," a programme announced by Babu Owino. The tour was scheduled to start at All Saints Cathedral following a church service, proceeding to Marikiti and Gikomba markets, Burma Market, Stage 17, B Centre, Manyanja, and finally culminating at Jacaranda Grounds. Police urged organisers and supporters to maintain peace, comply with the law, and avoid actions that could disrupt business or jeopardize public safety.
