MP cautions ferry users against jumping into Likoni Channel during emergencies

Likoni MP Mishi Mboko has urged ferry operators to clarify an incident that occurred on Friday involving the MV Likoni. The MP expressed concern over the ferry's struggle to land at the ramp safely during heavy rainfall and high tide. She seeks authorities to determine if the issue was due to weather, tidal conditions, ferry ramp state, mechanical faults, or a mix of these factors.

Mboko also appealed to the Government, through Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, to fast-track the restoration of the Mtongwe ferry service, which would serve as an alternative crossing and reduce pressure on the Likoni Channel. She emphasized that any safety concerns must be resolved before they lead to a catastrophic accident.

Moreover, Mboko urged ferry users not to panic or attempt to jump into the channel during an emergency, reminding them that the Likoni Channel is a deep and busy waterway used by vessels heading to Kilindini Harbour. She advised users to remain calm, follow ferry crew instructions, and allow trained rescue personnel to manage emergencies.
