Judiciary stands united to shield judges from 'external pressure': CJP Afridi

Chief Justice Yahya Afridi addressed a national conference on judicial reforms and speedy justice provision in Islamabad, emphasizing that the entire judiciary united to shield judges from external pressure. He highlighted that procedures had been implemented to safeguard judicial officers from such influences. Afridi stressed the importance of district courts in the justice system and called for stronger collaboration between district courts and high courts.

He announced that the Code of Conduct had been amended to protect judges from external pressures and reiterated the judiciary's commitment to maintaining independence.

The Chief Justice expressed pride in the subordinate judiciary, acknowledging that judicial officers were fulfilling their duties despite challenges. Afridi underscored that empowering subordinate court judges was a crucial objective to build public trust, emphasizing that trust was earned through integrity rather than inheritance.

He stressed the necessity of timely justice delivery and pledged to fulfill the judiciary's requirements for a comprehensive justice system nationwide. Afridi urged judicial officers to conduct themselves honestly and stressed the importance of understanding ground realities for effective judicial reforms.

Addressing coordination issues between district courts and policymaking institutions, Afridi announced the establishment of a committee to promote uniformity in facilities and terms of service for judicial officers. He announced plans to provide health insurance to judicial officers across Pakistan, ensuring medical coverage for all judiciary employees.

Additionally, he revealed that courts would transition to solar power, with improved internet facilities and electronic libraries being provided to the judiciary. Facilities such as solar power, water, internet, and women's services were being implemented in the subordinate judiciary with provincial government cooperation.

In Balochistan, solar power, water, and internet facilities had already been established in 18 districts, with the remaining areas set to receive these amenities within a month. Notably, Nangarparkar tehsil in Tharparkar province already benefited from these solar power facilities. Afridi also announced initiatives to establish facilitation centers for women and children within the judiciary.

He revealed that more than Rs3 billion had been allocated for judiciary improvements this year, a significant increase from the previous Rs900 million released over 20 years under the Access to Justice Programme. Afridi concluded by paying tribute to judges who had sacrificed their lives, urging all institutions to fulfill their responsibilities and young judges to ensure justice is delivered effectively.
