Death toll in Ondo suspected herbal poisoning incident rises to 29

The death toll in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, linked to suspected poisoning from alcoholic substances, has risen to 29, according to the Ondo State Government. Health Commissioner, Dr Banji Ajaka, announced this on Friday night in Akure, adding that there are 60 suspected cases, with 27 still under medical observation and three in hospital.

The death toll had previously been reported at 24 on Thursday, rising to 27 based on confirmation from Odigbo Local Government Chairman, Taiwo Adegoroye. The affected individuals, predominantly males between 16 and 55 years, experienced symptoms such as headache, body pain, weakness, visual disturbances, breathing difficulties, and altered consciousness.

While laboratory evidence of the cause remains pending, samples of suspected alcoholic substances have been submitted for toxicological investigation. The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with regulatory and security agencies, and several suspects have been taken into custody. The state government has imposed a temporary ban on locally brewed alcoholic and herbal beverages in the affected area, urging residents to avoid such products and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms.
