Death toll in Ondo suspected herbal poisoning incident rises to 29

The death toll in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, suspected to be linked to poisoning from alcoholic substances, has risen to 29, according to the Ondo State Government. Health Commissioner Dr Banji Ajaka reported that 60 suspected cases have been recorded, with 27 individuals under medical observation and three in hospital admission.

Initial reports from the Odigbo Local Government Chairman, Taiwo Adegoroye, indicated a death toll of 24, rising to 27 by Thursday. Most of the victims are males aged between 16 and 55, predominantly from Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu, Newtown, Odole, Okele and Oniparaga communities. Symptoms include headache, body pain, weakness, visual disturbances, breathing difficulties, and altered consciousness.

Laboratory tests are ongoing to determine the toxin responsible, with 36 blood and urine samples analyzed and suspected alcohol samples subjected to toxicological investigation. The state government has banned the production and sale of locally brewed alcoholic beverages and alcoholic herbal products in the affected area, urging residents to avoid unlicensed sources and seek immediate medical help if they experience symptoms.
