Rennes beat Marseille to seize top spot in Ligue 1

Adrien Thomasson netted the lone goal as Rennes surged to the top of Ligue 1 with a 1-0 triumph over Marseille on Friday. The Moroccan-born midfielder found the back of the net early in the second half after Mousa Al-Tamari's assist, securing Rennes' third consecutive win. The match saw Rennes solidify their position with 10 points, just one ahead of Monaco. The principality club have claimed all three of their matches thus far, giving them a chance to reclaim the top spot when they travel to Strasbourg on Saturday.

Marseille, however, struggled to make a significant impact in the game. Financially constrained following their failure to secure a Champions League spot, the team sold key players like Mason Greenwood and Quinten Timber and failed to replace them. They appointed new coach Bruno Genesio from Lille, but the side he leads is made up of fringe players and those who returned from loan spells.

Since their opening day victory over Strasbourg 4-0, Marseille has not managed to secure a point. Their upcoming fixtures include a Europa League clash against Besiktas and a home game against Paris Saint-Germain.

Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, who have yet to taste victory in Ligue 1 this season, will kick off their title defense against Brest on Sunday. Paris FC and Lyon, both teams that have started the season on a high, will face off in Paris on Saturday.
