Rennes beat Marseille to seize top spot in Ligue 1

Paris: Adrien Thomasson scored the sole goal for Rennes, clinching a 1-0 victory over Marseille and provisional top spot in Ligue 1. The goal came in the second half, after Mousa Al-Tamari had made a header cross the ball back into the goal.

Thomasson converted it from close range but later saw another effort rebound off the crossbar. Rennes now has 10 points, one point ahead of Monaco. The principality club have won all three of their matches and can reclaim first place if they beat Strasbourg on Saturday. Marseille had several chances to score but struggled due to their inability to make any new signings after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

They sold key players like Mason Greenwood and Quinten Timber and appointed coach Bruno Genesio, who must field a team with fringe players and those returning from loan spells. After winning the opening game 4-0 against Strasbourg, Marseille hasn't scored since and faces tough away games against Besiktas in the Europa League and Paris Saint-Germain at home.

Reigning champions PSG haven't won a Ligue 1 game yet before their match against Brest. Paris FC and Lyon, who have started strongly, face off in Paris on Saturday.
