Permohonan pengampunan Najib ditangguh ke mesyuarat akan datang

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak sought forgiveness six years ago for embezzling RM42 million from SRC International. Petaling Jaya: Najib's request for forgiveness has been postponed until the upcoming Council for Mercy petition, set to take place soon. This decision was made at the 63rd Council for Mercy for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, which convened today.

According to the Public Prosecution Department statement, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim graciously accepted Najib's request for forgiveness. During the same meeting, Sultan Ibrahim also graciously pardoned 65 prisoners, who must be deported and sent back to their respective countries within six months of release, according to the statement.

Najib, 72, was accused of wrongdoing six years ago for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International. He was fined RM210 million and sentenced to 12 years in Kajang Prison, since August 2022. The Council for Mercy subsequently reduced half of his prison sentence to six years and fined him RM50 million. In December 2022, High Court Judge Alice Loke rejected Najib's plea to serve the remaining six years of his reduced prison sentence under house arrest.

Meanwhile, Umno President Zahid Hamidi expressed sorrow over the decision but remained respectful of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He stated that they still support and cherish the institution of kings and hope the best will be given to Najib, when encountered at the Umno General Assembly.
