Pengampunan Najib dijangka beri kesan bercampur kepada Umno, BN

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to 12 years in prison and a RM210 million fine in the SRC International case. The Federal Territory Relief Institution subsequently reduced his prison term to six years and the fine to RM50 million. Political analysts believe that Najib's pardon could have a mixed impact on Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN).

According to political analysts, the pardon could boost Umno's base, especially among supporters who believe Najib was a victim of political persecution. It could also provide fresh energy to Umno, particularly as the next general election approaches. The pardon could also provide a reprieve for Umno's top leaders who have been advocating for Najib's cause.

The analysts also believe that Najib could become a campaign asset for BN in appealing to some Malay voters. However, the pardon could also create challenges for BN in rebuilding its image after its defeat in the 2022 general election. There is also a risk that PH could use the pardon to revive the 1MDB scandal and attack BN, potentially losing support among non-Malay, urban, and upper-class voters.

Additionally, if Najib is found guilty in other ongoing cases, it could create a negative image for BN as people continue to scrutinize his actions. The PH also faces the risk of using Najib's pardon to further their anti-racism and reform narrative, but there is a possibility that PH might face backlash from reformist voters who question why this is happening now when PH is in power.

The analysts warn that a full pardon or house arrest for Najib could pose a greater challenge for PH in the upcoming Melaka by-election and the general election.
