Pakistan urges Hong Kong to resume Cathay Pacific flights

Pakistan has urged Hong Kong to reestablish flights operated by Cathay Pacific, arguing that improved air connectivity could lead to increased trade, tourism, and business-to-business relations between the two nations. This proposal emerged from a meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee Ka-Chiu.

Both parties reiterated their dedication to deepening trade, economic collaboration, and people-to-people connections between Pakistan and Hong Kong, according to a statement released on Friday. Seeking to open new avenues for cooperation, Jam Kamal advocated for greater collaboration in trade services, aviation, finance, and business-to-business ties.

He specifically urged Hong Kong to consider reinstating Cathay Pacific flights to Pakistan, asserting that enhanced air connectivity could foster business, tourism, and commercial exchanges. The minister emphasized the substantial Pakistani community in Hong Kong and recognized their significant contributions to Pakistan's economy, notably through remittances and strengthened interpersonal bonds.

Jam Kamal expressed gratitude to the chief executive for Hong Kong's generous hospitality and reiterated Pakistan's steadfast commitment to its long-standing ties with China, while stressing the importance of expanding trade and economic partnerships with Hong Kong. During the meeting, the chief executive commended Jam Kamal's remarks at the Belt and Road Summit earlier in the day, particularly his emphasis on international cooperation, connectivity, and shared economic growth.

Lee acknowledged Pakistan's role in promoting peace and regional stability, highlighting that reduced tensions and greater stability are crucial for global economic development. He also appreciated Pakistan's leadership and constructive engagement in this context. The chief executive underscored the enduring and strong relationship between Pakistan and China, acknowledging its positive impact on the Belt and Road Initiative.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation and exploring new areas of mutual economic benefit. Jam Kamal also extended an invitation for Chief Executive John K.C. Lee to visit Pakistan.
