Fire breaks out at Pulau Burung landfill in Penang, 40pc still burning in one sector (VIDEO)

NIBONG TEBAL, Sept 11 — An uncontrolled blaze erupted at the Pulau Burung Solid Waste Landfill Site, leaving an area of 1,003 square metres still ablaze early this morning. No injuries were reported following the incident, which occurred at around 11.36 pm last night. Penang Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Assistant Director, John Sagun Francis, stated that a call for assistance prompted the swift deployment of fire engines from the Nibong Tebal Fire and Rescue Station (BBP).

The Operational Response Team swiftly arrived on the scene and initiated firefighting and containment measures, including creating a firebreak to curb the fire's spread. The fire, which affected a section of the landfill measuring 120 by 90 feet, was brought under control by 12.30 am. However, as of 7.30 am on the following day, overhaul operations were still ongoing to ensure complete extinguishment of the flames.

The firefighting efforts were divided into two sectors, with Sector A under the management of Sungai Bakap BBP and Sector B under Nibong Tebal BBP. As of the morning hours, approximately 40 per cent of the fire in Sector A had not yet been extinguished, while 50 per cent of the blaze in Sector B remained active. Additional support came from the Bandar Perda BBP, the Valdor, Permatang Tinggi, and Nibong Tebal Volunteer Fire Brigades.
