Dictator meme shows lack of human awareness - Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe, the all-time leading scorer for France with 22 goals in World Cup history, has spoken out against a viral meme that superimposes his face onto the body of a dictator. The Real Madrid and France forward, 27, stated in an interview with France Football that the meme demonstrates a lack of political and human awareness among some individuals. Although Mbappe acknowledged there was a humorous intent behind the AI-generated image, he argued that it trivialized serious historical issues.

The meme has been used by some fans on social media to reflect Mbappe's dominance in matches, while others have suggested it relates to his influence at clubs. Speaking to the publication, Mbappe said: "There's a funny side to it because you can sense that, for some people, it's good natured. Then there's a side that's a bit less funny, because we know the damage people like that have caused throughout history."

He emphasized that being compared to individuals who have murdered others or caused misery for millions of people was unacceptable given his own record of achievement.

Mbappe also commented on the nickname "Mobut" that teammate Ousmane Dembele had given him during the 2026 World Cup. The nickname is derived from Mobutu Sese Seko, the dictator who ruled the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) for three decades. Dembele had jokingly referred to Mbappe as "Mobut," but Mbappe clarified that it was meant as a lighthearted joke rather than a serious comparison.
