Dictator meme shows lack of human awareness – Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid and France forward, has spoken out against a meme that superimposes his face onto the body of a dictator, criticizing it for demonstrating "a lack of political and human awareness." The 27-year-old footballer acknowledged there was a "funny side" to the AI-generated image, but said it trivialized important historical events.

Mbappe made these comments in an interview with France Football, where he reflected on the meme's implications. He noted that some fans use it to highlight his dominance on the field, while others interpret it as representing his influence at clubs. However, the French star believed that the meme also risks downplaying the atrocities committed by historical dictators.

Speaking about the perceived comparison to ruthless leaders, Mbappe stated: "Being compared to people who murder others, or who have made millions upon millions of people miserable… I don't think I've done that in my life." Despite the light-hearted intent behind the meme, he argued that it occasionally reveals an insufficient understanding of global politics and human rights among certain individuals.

Additionally, Mbappe mentioned the nickname "Mobut," given to him by teammate Ousmane Dembele during the 2026 World Cup. This moniker is derived from Mobutu Sese Seko, the dictator who governed the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) for three decades. Mbappe clarified that the nickname was a playful creation by Dembele, who had picked it up from online sources.
