After Apple’s launch of its foldable iPhone, what are the caveats for Chinese buyers?

Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, at an event in California, following months of anticipation. Priced at $1,999, the device is Apple's most expensive offering yet, though it is cheaper than initial estimates. In mainland China, the starting price is ¥15,999 (approximately $2,384), with the top-tier model priced at ¥26,499 (about $3,968).

The iPhone Duo features a unique wide-fold design with a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display, which expands into a tablet-like format. This design aims to provide a seamless, iPad-like experience, according to IDC's Francisco Jeronimo. The device is powered by the A20 Pro chip and includes an advanced thermal management system to maintain performance.

However, Chinese buyers face several challenges. The device will only be available once regulatory approval is granted, as eSIM-only technology requires strict reviews due to cybersecurity concerns. This has previously caused delays for other iPhone models. Additionally, features like Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are not available in mainland China, and Apple Reference Image, which could verify edited photos, will also be omitted at launch due to regulatory restrictions.

Despite these challenges, the iPhone Duo could disrupt the dominant position of Huawei in China's foldable market. The event also saw the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, with upgrades in AI, performance, battery life, and camera technology, though both models saw a $100 price increase from the previous year.
