Ukrainian drone attack hits Russia’s Novy Urengoy industrial site nearly 2,800 kilometers from the border

On September 9, a drone attack on an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, Russia, was repelled by its defenders, though the resulting debris caused a fire. No casualties were reported. Russian Presidential Envoy Artem Zhoga stated that the fire at the fuel and energy facility prompted the evacuation of personnel. This attack, the first on the Arctic part of the Urals Federal District, may mark the longest-range strike launched from Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion, according to The Insider's findings.

The target facility, processed by Gazprom's Pererabotka division for shipment through the Urengoy-Surgut main condensate pipeline, is located about 2,800 kilometers from Ukraine, roughly 500 kilometers beyond the previously attacked Omsk oil refinery. The drone's launch site remains unidentified, leaving the record-setting claim unclear.

Ukraine's Special Operations Forces previously claimed to have launched the longest-range attack on the Omsk refinery in early July, employing an FP-1 drone. The Novy Urengoy Condensate Preparation Plant, the target of this attack, was also identified by Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+. The facility converts gas condensate into a liquid hydrocarbon byproduct for use in oil refining and petrochemicals.

In October 2024, Gazprom installed a new unit at the plant, enabling it to process condensate from various regional gas deposits. The Omsk district authorities declared a threat of drone attack on Tuesday, prompting the suspension of airport operations in several cities, including Surgut, Igrim, Nyagan, Sovetsky, and Uray, as well as the relocation of some classes in local schools.
