Nearly 100 lithium-ion battery fires reported in Toronto so far this year, a new high

Toronto Fire officials have reported a staggering 97 lithium-ion battery fires since January, surpassing the total number of such incidents from the entirety of last year. This new record high marks a more than threefold increase since 2022, when firefighters responded to just 29 lithium-ion battery fires citywide. The service's spokesperson attributes the surge to a lack of regulation and improper storage practices.

Lithium-ion batteries, which power devices like electric bikes, laptops, and phones, can ignite if damaged or charged incorrectly. Recent incidents include four such fires in a single 24-hour period last month and two additional fires linked to electric bikes on Sunday. The Ontario fire marshal's office has issued warnings about the heightened risks, noting that these batteries can cause "intense" fires that spread rapidly and emit toxic smoke.

As battery-powered devices become more prevalent, the number of related fires is climbing across Ontario. Toronto Fire recommends using only safety-tested and certified devices, adhering to manufacturer guidelines for charging and storage, and storing batteries away from flammable materials. The fire marshal also advises against modifying lithium-ion batteries or using uncertified alternatives, and stresses that batteries should only be recycled at approved facilities, not mixed with household waste.
