100kg falling rock crushes pickup, kills driver in Lampang

A 100kg rock plummeted from a roadside cliff in Lampang, Thailand and demolished a pickup truck, resulting in the death of its driver on September 8, according to local news reports. The incident occurred on Highway 106, near the Na Pong subdistrict in the Thoen district of Lampang. Upon learning of the tragedy, Thoen Police Station, along with a physician from Thoen Hospital, officials from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and rescue teams, all arrived at the scene.

The victim, identified as 42-year-old Sonthaya, was found inside the crushed vehicle, which belonged to a grey Isuzu pickup truck registered in Chiang Mai. The roof above the driver's seat had been severely damaged, trapping him beneath the debris. Sonthaya's passenger, a 40-year-old woman named Atcharaphan, emerged from the wreckage with only minor injuries. Initial reports suggest that the couple had been traveling from Si Sa Ket province to their residence in Chiang Mai's Doi Tao district.

Local authorities discovered that the unfortunate accident occurred due to a slippery road caused by recent rainfall. Sonthaya lost control of the vehicle while navigating a bend uphill, ultimately overturning. A bystander managed to steer the truck to the side of the road before the devastating event took place.

Following the incident, police contacted Sonthaya's relatives to facilitate the arrangements for his body to be transported to Thoen Hospital for a thorough post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The community has come together to support the grieving family as they mourn the tragic loss.
